Overlooking Lake Maggiore, Oggebbio is made up of small historic hamlets that descend along the mountain slope, with steep lanes, stone houses, ancient churches and sudden openings onto the water. In the village there is a small shop selling fresh bread and milk, excellent local cheeses and cured meats, fruit, vegetables and other daily essentials. You’ll also find a pharmacy, a welcoming café and a wood-fired pizzeria with a beautiful lake view, making your stay comfortable even without a car.
Oggebbio is an excellent starting point for exploring some of the most beautiful landscapes of Piedmont and nearby Switzerland. Around Cadebei there are easy and pleasant walking paths, perfect for relaxed strolls: short routes linking the tiny hamlets in the area, crossing shaded woods and offering lovely views of the lake and the village of Gonte. From the centre, a ten-minute walk leads to the quiet beaches by the lake. A little further south, in Ghiffa, lies the SS Trinità complex, a charming Baroque sanctuary surrounded by greenery, with panoramic views and a restaurant under the trees.
A few kilometres away is the Val Grande National Park, Italy’s largest wilderness area, made of deep forests, silence and panoramic trails. Nearby, the Val Canobbina offers routes among ancient bridges, mule tracks and small stone villages. Beyond the border, the valleys of Canton Ticino – such as the Centovalli and the Val Maggia – are known for their picturesque hamlets, turquoise streams and natural pools perfect for a summer swim. Further north is the Val d’Ossola, with alpine scenery, the medieval centre of Domodossola, the hot springs of Premia and charming places like Macugnaga and the “Via dei Torchi e dei Mulini”.
Lake Maggiore offers many places to discover, all easy to reach from Oggebbio. From Verbania or Stresa you can visit the Borromean Islands: Isola Bella, with its Baroque palace and terraced gardens; Isola Madre, a large open-air botanical garden; and Isola dei Pescatori, a tiny village suspended over the water. Another gem is the hermitage of Santa Caterina del Sasso, an ancient monastery perched on a cliff directly above the lake, accessible by boat or by car using the Intra–Laveno ferry.
A little further south lie Intra and Pallanza, the two souls of Verbania: Intra is lively, full of shops, restaurants and markets; Pallanza is elegant and flower-filled, known for the botanical gardens of Villa Taranto. Other charming villages nearby include Cannero Riviera, with its castles emerging from the water; Cannobio, with its lakeside promenade and famous Sunday market; Stresa, refined and romantic; and, across the Swiss border, Ascona and Locarno, two delightful towns rich in culture, lakeside walks and excellent food.
Whether you love hiking, exploring small villages, visiting botanical gardens or simply enjoying peace and memorable views, Oggebbio and Lake Maggiore offer a perfect blend of nature and history, a place to discover slowly and never stop appreciating.
