Fucecchio lies on the right bank of the Arno River, halfway between Florence, Pisa and Lucca. Its history is linked to the Via Francigena which, in this area, crosses the Arno to continue towards the Valdelsa, and to the presence of the Medici family, and it recalls the proximity of the Fucecchio Marsh. This natural area, known for being the largest inland marsh in Italy, was enhanced and utilised starting from the Renaissance, when Cosimo I de’ Medici had the Ponte a Cappiano built to cross and, if needed, regulate the course of the Usciana canal. Today the Marsh is one of the last refuges for numerous animal species and can be visited on foot, by bicycle along the paths that cross it, or with the traditional little boats. Here, as in the nearby Cerbaie Woods, it is possible to come across new views of the Tuscan countryside.
