Appointed city in 500 by Pope Sixtus V, Loreto, whose territory was formerly under the control of Recanati, has grown up around the house of Mary, the Basilica and fortified to protect it. Over the centuries, the presence of pilgrims has been increasing up to the remarkable figure of 4, 5 million visitors each year and from every country in the world, attracted by the chance to see with their own eyes the " Shrine of the Holy House, " brought in flight in the night between 9 and December 10, 1291, according to legend, the angels who withdrew from the land of origin, today the state of Israel, where the remains of rock-cut cave. The Basilica Gothic -Renaissance style that stands around, saw the participation between 1468 and 1755 by artists and architects who have made the history of Italian art such as: Luigi Vanvitelli (bell tower and drawings of the Shrine), Giuliano da Sangallo (dome), Andrea Sansovino (Apostolic Palace), Melozzo da Forli (decoration Vestry of St. Mark), Luca Signorelli (decoration Sacristy of S. Giovanni) and the Pomarancio who has completed the hall of the Treasury.
In the immediate vicinity is Porto Recanati (about 4 km), renowned seaside municipality and the second in Italy as the number of blue flags awarded. Noteworthy, also, the Castello Svevo, now known as " Arena Beniamino Gigli, " where there are concerts, exhibitions and live shows. Just 7 km, we find Recanati, a town of art that gave birth to the great Giacomo Leopardi, Italian poet and literary genius and Beniamino Gigli, considered one of the most beautiful voices of all time. 7 km there is always Castelfidardo, birthplace of the accordion and the very famous battle of the same name. One could go on and on, but we wish to add two important locations: the coastal strip of Numana with the lovely village of Sirolo (14 km), which directly overlook the Conero and the " Two Sisters" and the town of Osimo, which houses the tomb and the remains visible of St. Joseph of Cupertino, patron of students.
