ZAFFERANA ETNEA
Tourist resort, because of its favored position in between the mountains and the sea, is located 600 meters above sea level, on the eastern slopes of Etna and is one of the municipalities of the Regional Park of Etna. There are several theories on the origin of the name, some say that the word is derived from the Arabic Zaufanah, which means "yellow" because of the large amount of brooms that are found in the forests of the territory; others indicate the etymology as deriving from cultivation, formerly practiced, saffron.
Ideal place for lovers of peace and nature, which however is a few kilometers from the larger towns of Eastern Sicily, such as Catania, Acireale, Taormina. All these "qualities" allow her to be a tourist center ideal for any time of year: in the winter, as the ski resort for lovers of winter sports; in the spring, as well as in the fall, thanks to the mild climate, becomes perfect place to discover the nature trails on the slopes of the volcano; in summer, finally, thanks to the flourishing woods, becomes a pleasant retreat to escape the high temperatures of the city, thus becoming the resort area.
Zafferana is estimated for the excellent production of honey. Honey production in fact is the main source of income for the town and has coverage of about 15% of the national honey.
As well as that of honey, even the wine is an important economic reality for the town; In fact there are many wineries in the area that produce excellent wines famous all over the world.
Excellent confectionery production that, in addition to local products, almond pastries, cannoli, cookies skiers, donuts rice, cassatelle ricotta, offers exclusive products of their invention as the tea leaves, thin biscuits with almonds, hazelnuts and pistachios. Other dish "made in Zafferana", is the renowned Sicilian pizza, a fried calzone stuffed with cheese and anchovies.
